Closing in Tampa

The recession is hitting Tampa really hard. In addition to the unemployment rate being over 12% we're losing our entertainment as well.

  1. Last Saturday, we said goodbye to our favorite little jazz spot, The Fox on Kennedy in Tampa. While I don't have all of the details, I am convinced that the decision to closed was based on a struggling economy.

Some supporters still show up in an attempt to keep the nite life alive but it just wasn't enough to save The Fox.

  2. Another recent closing in Tampa was the Mirage Night Club but for completely different reasons. Technically, I could put an economic spin on it though. The club has been required to close because of violence in and around the immediate vicinity. Why? The club execs can not afford adequate security to protect the establishment. So when fights break out, as they usually do when there is testosterone and alcohol, someone gets hurt. When a night out on the town turns into a night in the hospital, bad publicity goes up and club attendance goes down.

There have been recent rumors that the club was willing to hire additional security to allow the establishment to remain open but no word on whether they have followed through. I may just take a trip down Dale Mabry highway this weekend to see what's going on at the Mirage!

  3. Newsflash: The Mirage is actually still open and with security.
